Zhang Qiling had thought that connection had surely faded away as he expected it to. It was, after all, only ever meant to be a temporary side-effect of healing Wu Xie all those years ago. His first clue that it wasn’t quite gone should have been the odd feeling of disquiet he had before that phone call (“Xiaoge, I’m sick” still echoed in his mind on the darkest nights), but after ten years he’d almost forgotten about it. Perhaps if he’d thought more about it, he wouldn’t have been so startled now.
