Fanfic is all about the audience, much less so about the subject of the story. In RP fic, the people in question may be the leaping off point but they're not the final destination, and the celebrity's own story is still very much intact.

Summary
One piece of outrage for some people discussing the use of the Haiti tragedy's aftermath as a story setting (by more than one author, no less), was that these stories were romances. At the same time, I was reading a post titled, rather unfortunately, "Romance means never having to doubt your choices".
I think an element that is heavily in play in fanfic fandom is the idea that enjoying something means turning off your brain and ceasing to have any critical thought about what you're reading/viewing/playing. In contrast, you have events such as the "fic warnings" debate that indicates that there's only so much "turning off" that anyone can do before your own sacred cow is gored. The residue of that debate leaped out at me when I read this phrase:
"I totally agree with the idea that each novel in the romance genre represents a safe space for readers to enjoy without apprehension."

What doesn't get mentioned here is how conversations that used to occur mostly in fandom spaces are now spreading out into the news media as more and more people write about TV for pay.

What sorts of source materials tended to give rise to a lot of good fanfic? Maybe it's just random chance? But putting aside the fact that many of us are going to have different ideas of what "good" is, I thought I'd put it to a vote. What factors does a canon text have that contribute to a substantial body of good fanfic? These were the results.

The crux of the thing is that the canon, whatever it is, has inspired the audience's imagination and engagement, but whatever that spark is may prove to be overly specific, or elusive, or transitory.

Looking back at S5 episodes in my earlier post made me think of how season premieres figure into the rest of the season. Not counting the Pilot, which had to set up the whole series and introduce our characters, the strongest premiere episode was in S2.

Summary
I am still irked by the lack of commentaries on SPN's shortest season yet, but much less so compared to how annoyed I became at some of the comments by Gamble and Kripke. Honestly, it seems somehow miraculous that we get anything worth watching ending up on screen. The comments in question were Gamble's on JiB and Kripke's on Dream. It made me think of a post I read complaining about Kripke as a show runner, and how he was given chance after chance to have his own shows and yet seemed largely uninterested in his own creations. On the whole I thought the post had too much of an ax to grind, but I thought there was a lot of truth to this portrayal, especially since most of it comes right out of Kripke's mouth.

Summary
I've written before about the increasing tendency to use character death in storytelling, so I was particularly intrigued to read about the POV of the network execs. I know I've always thought that its overuse could be chalked up to writer laziness, a cheap ploy to generate emotional reaction or serve as a conclusion. Apparently the execs think the same and are not particularly keen to use deaths as promotional events for their shows.
