    Summary

A crow rustles in the undergrowth, hopping through unattended–to tufts of grass. This is beyond the city’s land, it belongs to no–one, thus no man cares to mind it. “Oh, gods I thought gentle, what have I done to anger you so?” Romeo despairs, head tilted to the treetops and the sky beyond. “I beg of thee: explain my transgressions. This is but my sixteenth summer, I am a stranger to the world yet. Teach me my shortcomings, and I shall strive to make amends.”

The crow stops shuffling to stare at him with one beady eye. “If thee be a messenger of the gods, do tell them I repent, O crow.”

The crow cocks its head intelligently, and makes a low sound. It knows too much, Romeo thinks, staring back at it. Perhaps it really is a messenger — wingéd beast of the pantheon.
