A recent book featuring a fan and a fanfiction format got my attention because of the way it an interview about it lumped all fandom and fanworks together. In addition, it suggested that it was the level of quality and obsessiveness that separates fanfic from profic. But I think it's more on target to say it's a focus on the audience and authenticity of it that makes a difference.

While the short answer is that it would be hard to get accurate numbers with which to tell for sure, it's possible there are many reasons. In fact, it may be asking the question which is the most interesting part.

I don't often see discussion of how TV viewers are like readers, in that they not only like certain genres but also certain story tropes, and evaluate what they see based on whether or not it satisfies their story cravings rather than on the merits of whatever the thing is. Fanfic is a genre grounded in scratching itches, it is very reader oriented (even if the only reader is the writer) and is, especially when shared online, often part of a larger community of readers and set of works that all set up certain expectations.

Well before the Meta Manifesto fest got started, I wanted to review Merlin fic trends with an (inevitable) focus on Merlin/Arthur stories. One caveat to all that follows is that it describes fanworks available through AO3. There are likely to be significant differences, particularly in terms of the het to gen to slash ratio, in other online locations.

I started reading Avengers fics based on recs I was picking up from my flist. Although I was really interested in gen, especially fics featuring Natasha, most of the early ones recommended were Loki/Tony. At first glance the FrostIron ship didn't seem very likely to me. However, after trying out Bruce/Loki, Clint/Loki, Darcy/Loki, Thor/Loki, Jane/Loki, Steve/Loki, Sif/Loki and Natasha/Loki, I have to say it's the one that makes the most sense to me.

Pondering the appeal of the Spike/Xander Ship by yourlibrarian

I was having a discussion with someone about why some ships were heavily written and read in the Buffyverse, and others such as Sparmony were practically non-existent. And it raised a question I’ve had for some time about why Spander became so popular.

For a while now, I've been curious what people see as the common stories in SPN. Now that I've been reading around in SPN fic for a while I think I can identify a few categories, but I'm interested in other ideas. I'm not focusing on what typical fanfic plots tend to get used (first times, spell goes awry, bodyswapping, amnesia, etc.), but rather, how canon and characters tend to get repeatedly reshaped.

While responding to a question of "Should more RPF 'cross the line' and be turned into publishable original fiction?" this was also the week that SPN decided to turn in a mind-bender of an episode with an RP AU.
To me there's automatically a difference between a story that purports to be about a living or deceased person and attempts to use as much evidence as possible to recreate them as they are/were, and stories that merely use the archetype of a person as a framework on which to develop a character. Because if it's the latter, I suspect just about every piece of "original" fiction out there contains characters that are based on people the author knows, or knows of. Writers are like magpies, constantly gathering bits and pieces from their lives to use in their writing, and other people are certainly part of that collection.

Vid and Fic Categories by yourlibrarian

It’s probably a professional tendency but I like to categorize, contextualize and devise labels for things. And lately as I’ve been working on video recs I find that I’m curious about how evaluating vids and fic overlap, and what it is that makes something stand out for me.

When Hunting talks about how any story that closes a canon (which was intentionally left open post-finale in QaF) is writing a heteronormative ending, it made me think that the primary goal of a lot of fanfic is exactly to replace uncertainty with certainty

How do you like your stories? by yourlibrarian

In musing about how much I enjoy reading fanfic, I was thinking of the profic/fanfic differences that to me generally come out in favor of fanfic. And this is mostly because fanfic can do what profic does, but the reverse is usually not true.

Something that comes up regularly in fanfic discussions is how much fic we read and how often. I took a guess at how frequent it was for me but decided to also start keeping track and see how close I came. So I thought I'd do a survey and ask people how often they think they read fic and what kinds they read.

The Symbolism of Topping by yourlibrarian

Summary
I’ve been noticing, after a few months of reading SPN fic that I seemed to be seeing the Spike effect all over again. I saw a discussion about Sam/Dean fic and who always seems to be topping. Which is a funny starting place to me because it seems to be an important issue for many people, yet for the longest time in fic I never really noticed it.

Funny that she would use the word "romances" given that early sales of 50 Shades, not to mention the early success of the eReader market, have been largely ascribed to women NOT wanting other people to know (and judge) what they're reading.

Part of the appeal of fanfic is that it is, usually, a non-explicit discussion of the story through fiction, a way to be both "enlightened about motive and meaning" and to realize one's own perspective through either agreement or disagreement with another text.

And it seemed to me that this is what's at the heart of so much outrage over fanfic. The whole horror at taking elements of something designed for one message (one with which the objector agrees and identifies) and turning it into something with a different message seems to really rankle, as if this repurposing is a direct attack upon a person's values and personal enjoyment.

Summary
While in NYC I went to its Folk Art Museum and saw an exhibit that instantly made me think of fanfic, especially since the exhibit itself was about works influenced by other works. The exhibit was about Henry Darger. While I have no art history background and usually take for granted what curators tell me, in this case I feel I rather do get it and it's the curators who are kind of nuts. And I think it's because I am accustomed these days to seeing things through lenses that fanfic has given me, and these are not lenses that these curators apparently share.
