Kill Bill or the movie antidote to the desire to bite people with words by shadowkat
Fandoms: Kill Bill Vol. 1, Quentin Tarantino

Summary
Kill Bill - interesting flick. More for film buffs or rather film geeks (like myself) I suspect than mainstream movie goers. I saw a certain artistry behind it. As movie buddy mentioned - it was more about recapturing and splicing together different artistic action movie styles than telling a story. In discussing it, we found ourselves analyzing the filter Quentin Tarantino used in a specific scene, trying to figure out exactly which movies he paid homage to various action styles, and commented on the symmetry and flow of the styles. Like I said - a film geek/buff movie, which means it will do moderately well but not brilliantly.
The theater we saw it in was small and relatively empty and this was in Brooklyn. Considering how incredibly violent the movie is, it was disturbing to see several unchaperoned thirteen year olds sitting in the front row. It makes Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs look like Saturday Matinees by comparison.

Dreamgirls - Supreme Girls ...Fictionalized Reality (Film Review of Dreamgirls) by shadowkat
Fandoms: Dreamgirls (film), Dreamgirls (musical), The Supremes, Diana Ross, Jennifer Holliday
01 Jun 2023
Tags
Summary
The film Dreamgirls, which is the newest Bill Condon musical based on an old Broadway show, is an interesting if flawed film.
The film and the musical that proceeded it are loosely based on the history of the The Supremes - or Diana Ross's all female singing group before she took off and became a solo gig. The film borrows heavily from well-known factoids about Ross's life, such as her relationship with the Jackson Five, here the Campton or Campil Five. And notably, the fact that Ross took over the lead role of The Supremes from Flo Ballard and later or possibly during this period had an affair with Berry Gordon, head of Motown records at the time. Flo Ballard's tale is one of Motown's tragedies and the inspiration for the musical. The musical is not "Diana Ross's" story but rather "Flo's", a realistic Cinderella tale about racism and the power of looks over talent in the music business - which to some degree, and this is a flaw in both the source material and the film, over-simplified to make a point. Reality is never as clear cut as fiction, good guys and bad guys tend to blend together and are less definable.- Language:

Summary
Of the movies I've seen in 2005, which have been quite a few, this may be by far the best and one I think everyone should see, because unlike many movies it may change how you look at things later.
A History of Violence is directed by David Cronenberg and is based on a graphic novel by John Wagner and Vince Locke. The screenplay is by Josh Olson. It stars Viggo Mortensen, Maria Bello, Ed Harris, William Hurt and Ashton Holmes.

From Cabin in the Woods to Rosemary's Baby - What Works and What Doesn't in Horror Films by shadowkat

Summary
This is a very long meta on the horror genre, starting with ten great horror films that I find memorable and the tropes they are a part of. Also commentary on the horror genre in general and on why I see horror films and why they are made or even told.
Note this was written in April 2012, so a lot of films such as Get Out, Us, Shape of Water, It Follows, X, etc and the Netflix horror series have not come out yet let alone been thought of or written.

I marked the 1970s as a turning point because I think that this is when a particularly naturalistic form of cinema became popular.
