While the sky just dumped the equivalent of two huge buckets of rain on the city, I was reading a rather fascinating interview with William Gibson in The Summer issue of the Paris Review".

William Gibson is the writer of such books as Neuromancer, Pattern Recognition, Spook Country, Mona Lisa Overdrive and Count Zero. And coined the term "cyberspace" along with the genre that it encompasses.

Selected tid bits from the interview that interested me, [my comments are in parentheses in case it's not obvious] follow.

The following will compare Cabin with Hunger Games and various other films. Before going into the review, it feels odd to do a meta on it, since the film itself is more a meta than a film or a meta on the horror genre in general. So basically this is a review/meta on a meta-narrative horror film.

Buffy disagrees with the direction the Dark Horse Buffy Comics Writers want to take her character, and confronts them on the issue.

So the writers of the Buffy comics think "Buffy" wants a normal life. Apparently they skipped S6 and S7 and the first part of S9, when she tried that? OR...quick, someone mail them Jeannette Wintersen's memoir: "Why Be Happy when you can be Normal?" [As an aside, that has got to be the best title ever. Indeed, why be happy when you fit another person's definition of normality.] I'm sure Willow has a copy handy.

ETA: Dark Horse Comics Buffy only. [Boom's Buffy comics didn't exist when I wrote this. I honestly think Buffy would have been fine with S10-11 of Dark Horse, and the Boom Comics, different and ahem better writers/editors. Scott Allie and Whedon had left the building.]

Do we not have more commentary posts where creators discuss the process of their own work because they're not interested in doing so, because there aren't many readers interested in seeing or engaging with them, or because people feel inhibited in doing it?

    Summary

I am still irked by the lack of commentaries on SPN's shortest season yet, but much less so compared to how annoyed I became at some of the comments by Gamble and Kripke. Honestly, it seems somehow miraculous that we get anything worth watching ending up on screen. The comments in question were Gamble's on JiB and Kripke's on Dream. It made me think of a post I read complaining about Kripke as a show runner, and how he was given chance after chance to have his own shows and yet seemed largely uninterested in his own creations. On the whole I thought the post had too much of an ax to grind, but I thought there was a lot of truth to this portrayal, especially since most of it comes right out of Kripke's mouth.

Because I am in the midst of the March Meta Matters Challenge, I've been reviewing my Dreamwidth account since its early days. I was surprised to realize that fan video recs made up a lot of my first two years of posts. And as I read over them, I realized how important they were to my fannish experience at the time and what they revealed to me about canon.

I was fannishly excited at this vid and was dying to pick it apart in a meta way, and secretlytodream agreed to add her own perspective. Lyrics can be found here.

There are fascinating details in this look at Joss Whedon's visual landscapes and themes, but also a message involving communication efforts blocked and overcome resulting in personal connections and decisive action.

As proof positive that there's never a point where everything's been said, I want to point to charmax's vid Still Breathing, which I think puts a pretty good spin on Spike's story.

Giandujakiss's vid had great cuts and contrasts, and it made me rather thinky about Angel's history and relationships, and what different people actually represented to him.
