    Summary

As a sequel to my work "S. H.", Helena Cain reacts to her "wife" Gina's betrayal, with very negative consequences and also is profoundly confused, due partly to her own inevitable ignorance about how things really work. Her society is intrinsically pagan; and there're a lot of problems for that kind of society that should be considered.

    Summary

This is by means of introduction to three interesting female television genre writers, who are in some respects far more versatile then some of their male counterparts. Say what you will about Marti Noxon, Jane Espenson and Rebecca Rand Kirshner's work - they have with courage and dignity carved a place for themselves within the television landscape, taking on writing jobs on series that their male counterparts on Buffy never would and coming up with a far more versatile resume as a result.

I've always found fandom's worship of male show-runners a bit annoying. It's understandable in the UK, because as Dominic West of The Wire and The Hour stated - in the UK, you usually just have one writer. Sometimes three, if you are lucky. But it is in reality just one show-runner's vision. It was one of his problems with UK series, there's less collaboration. So it's more stunted. The Wire felt freeing to him because you had a collaboration - it wasn't just David Simon's vision, but about ten people and the cast had input. This is less the case in the UK.

Been rewatching Buffy the Vampire Slayer, S1-S3 at the moment, and have just completed the first five episodes of Season 3. What I've become struck by this go around, which I didn't really notice before, no idea why - is the deft critique of romantic love and in particular the gothic romance trope, with all of its horrific consequences. Joss Whedon and his writing team are deft satirists of the horror and in particular gothic horror/gothic romance tradition. Not surprising, considering the name of the series is Buffy the Vampire Slayer - that alone, just screams satire.

    Summary

This essay comes from a blog post on https://shadowkat.dreamwidth.org/486729.html. It is about how Joss Whedon and his writing team handled the characterization of vampires in their series, post Angel. Angel was a vampire cursed with a soul, who was ambivalently good ensouled, and completely evil without a soul. The soul acted as a sort of conscience. But, this posed a problem when other vampires were introduced. In addition, it posed a problem in regards to Angel's relationship with Buffy - since pure happiness rendered him evil. The essay explores how this was handled in the series -- and how similar writing traps can be be worked around.

    Summary

Do you remember your first love? A few, very few, people marry their first loves. My brother married his, and my mother married hers. But most of us -- don't or if we do, it ends in divorce, because once the wild passion ends there is little else. In the case of my parents and my brother - it was not "wild passion" so much as friendship that built into something more over time. They did not hop into bed or do wild makeout sessions at the start, they had discussions well into the night. It was in short not the stuff of novels - which seldom end well and often focus on those wild romances. Why do the wild and intense romances not last? The writers of Buffy and Angel examine those reasons in detail.

    Summary

Why do I like the fictional romantic relationships that I do? I'm not sure I know or that it is necessarily important that I do. Some things are unknowable after all or should be. I know that my tastes change like the wind. But I do know... that there is a pattern in the "fictional" relationships that appeal to me...and the is the gender power-play. Two people struggling to come to a common place. Equals. In power. In view. The push-pull. The banter. But mostly? It's the feeling of two people who are equally matched. They've met their match, their equal. No not soul mate. Not that. More someone who gets you, who understands your values, not your interests, but what means the most to you, what you would die for, what is the most important thing to you. Who knows your weaknesses, your triggers, and what makes you tick...yet is your shadow self, the other side. The complement. The yang to your ying. I look for those relationships in fiction. The other bits whatever they might be are just gravy, sometimes lumpy and unappetizing, and sometimes perfect and rich.

    Summary

I'm not really triggered by tv shows or fictional stories so much as people's reactions to those stories. It's a weird dilemma. I want to discuss these stories with others...but I also, want to enjoy the story and sometimes the two are counter-productive.

Examples? Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I desperately wanted to discuss this series in Seasons 6 and 7, and in some respects loved those seasons, but I had to deal with a volatile online fandom. And often they'd make me hate something, I'd have loved if I wasn't interacting with them. Farscape - was easier to watch, because I watched it long after it aired, and so the fandom wasn't really that active. No problems. BSG however...had similar issues.

Buffy disagrees with the direction the Dark Horse Buffy Comics Writers want to take her character, and confronts them on the issue.

So the writers of the Buffy comics think "Buffy" wants a normal life. Apparently they skipped S6 and S7 and the first part of S9, when she tried that? OR...quick, someone mail them Jeannette Wintersen's memoir: "Why Be Happy when you can be Normal?" [As an aside, that has got to be the best title ever. Indeed, why be happy when you fit another person's definition of normality.] I'm sure Willow has a copy handy.

ETA: Dark Horse Comics Buffy only. [Boom's Buffy comics didn't exist when I wrote this. I honestly think Buffy would have been fine with S10-11 of Dark Horse, and the Boom Comics, different and ahem better writers/editors. Scott Allie and Whedon had left the building.]
